Course Description:
BUS 101, Introduction to Business provides an overview of the American business enterprise and includes such topics as business ethics, operating a business in a global environment, forms of business ownership, micro- and macroeconomics, business start-ups, teamwork and communication, marketing, finance, and the legal regulatory environment of business.
Course Objectives:
- Compare and contrast private vs. public enterprise, ownerships and interrelationships among business, government, and society with emphasis upon multi-cultural and ethical environs.
- Define and apply theories of financial structure, including securities, risk management, and Federal Reserve operations.
- Define and apply the role of marketing and the role of consumers.
- Identify management functions, styles, processes, and the role of organized labor.
- Utilize control tools such as financial statements.
- Discuss the role of law and legal documents and torts.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate management functions, styles, and processes.
- Describe the various types of business ownership and the appropriateness of each type of ownership in different business situations.
- Demonstrate the chief features of marketing, finance, organization, and ethics as they apply to a business enterprise.

Class Expectations
Students will be expected to:
- Use the proper text as stated both in the Syllabus and on the Home Page.
- Participation = Attendance. Maintain regular and effective contact throughout this course which includes, but is not limited to:
- Submitting all assignments on time (this is done after you read the required chapters in the text and all information in the Module).
- Participating in online discussions and contributing peer replies by the due dates.
- Complete all other assigned coursework on time, such as papers or projects; along with quizzes and exams throughout the course.
- All work is expected to be turned in by 11:59 p.m. on the due dates clearly stated both in the Course Schedule of the Syllabus and in the Modules.
- It is strongly recommended that you log in to the class every day to see what you need to do, review announcements, review comments on graded work, read new discussion posts, and complete some of the assigned work.
- Please not wait until the end of the week the assignments are due to try and get all of the reading and assigned work completed or you will not get it all done.
- If there are extenuating circumstances causing you not to be able to submit your work by the due date, you will need to contact me. In addition, there will be a 20% deduction of points for any late assignment.
- No Show Policy: I will administratively drop (no show) any student who has failed to complete Module 0 (Orientation). You must complete this module, including all the assignments in order not to be dropped from this course. If Module 0 is not completed by August 28, 2022, you will be dropped from the course.
- If you have any questions, issues, or if something doesn’t make sense – about an assignment, the syllabus, expectations, or feedback please communicate! I am here to help! I will work with you to get you on track. I want you to be successful. Please do not wait until the last minute to let me know there’s a problem. Being notified after the fact is too late. If there are issues you need to contact me right away via phone, text, or email.
- If a student finds this class is not for them, or somewhere during the semester a student finds they are unable to complete the requirements of this class, it will be up to the student to formally drop this class through the Admissions Office.
- Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations are encouraged to contact Disabled Students Program & Services (DSPS) at (760) 921-5489. Students registered with DSPS have a right to certain services to help them succeed in the classroom.
- Use other resources available. Student Support Services

Expectations from me (Instructor):
- Grading
- The expectation is all work will be graded within a week of the due dates.
- After the due dates, any missing work will receive a zero. I will still accept late work, with the late point penalty assessed.
- I will do my best to grade work as it is turned in so you can see grades as soon as possible after submission.
- Availability
- Office Hours: I will be available as needed. I will post weekly zoom sessions, based on the needs of the students. See announcements each week for times and days.
- Please plan to attend the zoom sessions available the first week of class to help get you started in the right direction (especially if you are new to Canvas and/or Online classes). I will hold at least two zoom sessions at different times on different days to try and accommodate all students.
- Students may call, text, or email me anytime if assistance is needed.
- Be sure to leave your name and a message if you get my voicemail, I will get back to you as soon as possible.
